Questions, answered plainly.
Straight answers to what attorneys, funeral homes, advisors, and their compliance teams ask about When I Croak. Each answer stands on its own.
What is When I Croak?
When I Croak is a client map: a guided platform where a person records where their accounts, policies, property and contacts are, and who to call, with instructions for the people left behind. It never stores account numbers, passwords, or credentials. Professionals gift it to clients under their own brand.
What is the difference between a map and a vault?
A vault stores the things themselves — documents, passwords, account numbers. A map records where those things are and who to contact. When I Croak is a map. That distinction is why it holds nothing worth stealing, creates no custody or breach liability for a partner firm, and is trusted by clients who would never upload their passwords anywhere.
What is the First-48 Playbook?
The First-48 Playbook is the guided checklist a family opens in the first 48 hours after a death. It lists, in order, who to call and what to do, starting with the professionals the person designated — their attorney, funeral home, and advisor. Partners who gift seats appear at step one.
Can an estate attorney gift software to clients without a fee-splitting problem?
Under the When I Croak Seat Program, a firm purchases seats and gifts them as part of its engagement. The firm is not paid for referrals and clients pay the firm nothing for the platform. Any optional upgrade share can be waived by election. State bar rules vary; the program description is written for ethics counsel to review.
Does When I Croak give legal or financial advice?
No. It is an organizational tool. It never drafts documents, interprets a plan, or recommends a product or strategy. Every legal, financial, or arrangement question in the product resolves to "ask your professional," with the partner's contact card one tap away.
Can a partner see a client's map?
No. Clients own their maps. Partners on Practice and Portal tiers receive aggregate engagement reporting — seats activated, completion, annual-review activity — never map contents. A client may choose to share their map with a professional directly.
How does a funeral home become the designated provider?
When a funeral home gifts a seat, the family's map lists that home as designated provider, and the First-48 Playbook places it at step one with a call-now button. The family can change the designation at any time.
Is When I Croak safe for a financial advisor to recommend?
It is designed to sit outside an advisor's compliance perimeter: no account numbers, no credentials, no custody, no advice, no data flow to the advisor's systems, and no referral compensation under the Seat Program. Advisors should confirm with their own compliance department; a program description is provided for that review.
What does the free pilot include?
Three seats to gift to your next three clients, a branded welcome with your firm's name, and your firm on the First-48 Playbook for those clients. No card, no contract, no minimum. Set up in one business day.
What do clients pay?
Nothing for a gifted seat. If a client later chooses to upgrade to the Living Map or Legacy tier, that is their optional, direct purchase from When I Croak.
Where is When I Croak based?
WhenICroak, LLC is based in Tampa, Florida. It was founded by Jason Caras. The pilot partner program launched with Legacy Protection Lawyers in Tampa.
